Perfumes That Actually Smell Like Chai Tea

It may still be hot outside, but mentally, I’m ready for fall. One of my favorite ways to embrace a change in weather is by picking a new signature scent for the season, and right now I’m obsessing over finding the perfect cozy chai latte perfume.

The problem is that a lot of “chai” fragrances lean more sweet vanilla than actual spiced tea. I want cardamom, warmth, creaminess and enough spice to make me feel like I’m holding a steaming mug. These are the chai-inspired perfumes I’d recommend trying.

Nest Cardamom Latte: The one that perfectly balances spicy and creamy

When I started hunting for chai perfumes last month, I was delighted to discover that Nest had released a new scent that sounded like exactly what I was looking for. Cardamom Latte is an excellent perfume if you want something that smells like an actual creamy latte. It opens with a lovely spicy cardamom note before mellowing into jasmine petals and coconut milk. Don’t let the floral note scare you away. The overall effect is creamy and realistic rather than overtly floral. Vanilla cream in the base rounds everything out.

On me, the longevity isn’t amazing, but I’ve found that to be fairly common with creamy chai fragrances. Still, this is probably the easiest recommendation on the list if you want that cozy latte effect without smelling overly sugary.

Belnu Chai Fleur: The elegant niche perfume that evokes the feeling of chai

This beautiful perfume is the one that started my obsession with finding the perfect chai scent. Chai Fleur isn’t a photorealistic latte fragrance. Instead, it evokes the feeling of sipping a spicy chai while wrapped in a fuzzy throw blanket, looking out the window at the changing leaves.

It opens with a warm blend of nutmeg, cinnamon and green cardamom. As it dries down, lavender and violet start to emerge, adding a soft floral quality that makes the fragrance feel more complex. Vanilla bean, cedarwood and sandalwood give the base a warm, sophisticated finish.

This is the chai perfume I’d choose for someone who wants to smell elegant and cozy rather than like they’re wearing a super-sweet gourmand.

Being Frenshe Moon Milk: The best affordable find

If you’re curious about chai-inspired scents but don’t want to immediately invest in a niche perfume, Moon Milk is a great place to start. The scent combines creamy oat milk and warm vanilla with fresh nutmeg, ginger flower and bergamot. It’s warm and comforting with enough spice to give it that chai-adjacent feeling, but it’s more straightforward than some of the other fragrances on this list.

The longevity isn’t particularly strong on me, but at this price point, it’s hard to complain. I actually love it as a bedtime scent when I want something cozy and relaxing. And if you decide you want to completely wrap yourself in the fragrance, Moon Milk comes in an entire range of products, including body and home fragrance options.

Anjali Perfumes Chai Chai Chai: The photorealistic chai that’s next on my list

This is the one I’m most intrigued to try next. The inspiration behind Chai Chai Chai is part of what makes it so interesting. Anjali Perfumes created the fragrance around the experience of drinking masala chai from a chaiwala during a train journey in India—and the scent is designed to capture far more than just “chai spices.”

It opens with cardamom, ginger and a biscuit note meant to evoke the cookie you might have alongside your tea. Warm milk, tonka bean and strong black tea make up the heart, while sugar, soft musk and an earthy clay accord represent the traditional clay cup.

That last detail is what really sold me. Rather than simply creating another sweet cardamom fragrance, this one is trying to recreate the entire experience of drinking a cup of masala chai.

I have a feeling it could rise straight to the top of my list once I finally get my nose on it.

Which chai perfume should you try?

If you want creamy and easy to wear, start with Nest Cardamom Latte. If you want something more elegant and perfume-like, Chai Fleur is my pick. Moon Milk is a great budget-friendly introduction, while Chai Chai Chai sounds like the one to try if you’re hunting for the most realistic cup-of-chai experience.

The best chai perfume may still be out there, but these are a very good place to start.
